Managing People

Workshop: Managing People

Learning to manage people effectively is a key challenge and opportunity for any manager.  The rising manager must learn how to help everyone on their team work together, acquire new skills, manage their time, communicate well, and be highly productive.  Managers must also understand how to assign tasks, create expectations, encourage teamwork, manage conflict, foster discussion and resolve issues.  They must be adept at providing feedback on strengths and areas for improvement.

In this manager-level course, participants will learn how to create a “culture of feedback” with their direct reports, so that they understand how to create an ongoing process of delivering specific, positive and constructive information on employee performance on a daily, weekly and quarterly basis.

Among the topics covered in this course will be how to:

  • Reinforce positive behaviors through praise, reward and recognition
  • Provide immediate, candid feedback on performance issues
  • Acknowledge listeners concerns, clarify and discuss resolutions
  • Prepare for employee meetings by writing down and practicing talking points

Participants will discuss two case studies on managing people and dealing with conflict.  They will work together to use the practices from the workshop to write up approaches to managing personalities and performance.
