In your executive role, you know that your board, senior team, and shareholders expect you to achieve profitable and sustainable growth. Regardless of the challenges, you’re going to be judged on the numbers.
But talking only about balance sheets and income statements won’t inspire your teams to innovate, adapt, and prosper. As an executive coach, one of the most interesting things I’ve found is that leaders need to “unlearn” some of the skills that got them promoted and master new skills if they are to drive exponential growth.
Here are three keys to unlocking your organization’s growth potential:
1. Tell stories to engage the hearts and minds of your audiences.
Storytelling is as old as the hills and as hot as your latest iPhone app. Share stories about your company, your team, and, importantly, about yourself. For your employees, your stories may well be the difference between them having a job and having a purpose.
2. Don’t underestimate the need for constant communication.
When you’re fueling growth, you’ll need to craft the right messages for a variety of audiences… and you’ll need to have and to execute a communication strategy to make sure your powerful points sink in and lead to action.
3. Relentlessly focus on the future state.
On the road to growth, it’s easy to get bogged down in tactics. You need to keep elevating the conversation so people don’t forget to dream the possible dream about what your company can achieve and what it can become in the years ahead.
