Challenge

When the President of his largest business unit retired, the CEO of major health insurer reached down two levels in the organization to promote a finance leader into the vacant role. He was very well respected and capable but had a steep learning curve as he was getting pulled up above his peers and had to learn about all 7 lines of business, while building trust with his new team, the Board, and the CEO. With so much at stake, the CEO and the retiring President brought in a coach to ensure his success in making the transition.

Solution

To help him make the shift from tactical problem solver to leader, Bates started with the ExPI™ assessment, to provide the data and the priorities to tackle key organization challenges that were causing his new leadership team to work at odds, rather than as a team, eroding margins and slowing growth. His other challenge was to take the company into the post-HCA era, profitably and with a new risk profile to manage. We then worked with his leadership team as individuals and as a team, to further accelerate his progress.

Outcome

The President seized on the insight-based coaching to get up to speed and bring about organizational change. There is resounding support for his leadership from the organization, his team and the CEO—who had high expectations. The company has continued with strong growth, and recently had its best year ever under his leadership. His leadership team has dramatically increased their collaboration and the unit has picked up market share as well as margin, under his guidance.
